ABOUT MMIF

In a groundbreaking move, the Malawi Government, in concert with private sector partners and other stakeholders, is organizing the country’s inaugural 2024 Malawi Mining Investment Forum. This two-day international conference and expo, taking place from April 23-24 in the capital Lilongwe, aims to propel Malawi’s extractive industry into the global spotlight.

The resource-rich southern African nation boasts a diverse array of minerals, including coveted rare earth elements, graphite, uranium, gold, and gemstones. These resources are poised to play a pivotal role in driving industrialization, a key pillar of the Malawi 2063 Vision.

Moreover, the mining sector represents a significant source of government revenue through taxes, royalties, and fees – funds essential for catalyzing development across various sectors.

Beyond economic benefits, Malawi’s mining industry has the potential to generate employment opportunities, nurture skills development, and bolster livelihoods through artisanal and small-scale mining operations. Recognizing this potential, the government has set an ambitious target for the mining sector to contribute at least 20% to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Achieving this goal will necessitate robust legal, policy, and institutional frameworks, fostering public-private partnerships in mineral exploration and extraction, promoting local beneficiation and value addition, formalizing artisanal and small-scale mining, and fortifying auxiliary sectors such as transportation and energy.

The 2024 Malawi Mining Investment Forum will serve as a collaborative platform, convening government representatives, development partners, mining companies, artisanal and small-scale mining operators, financial institutions, civil society organizations, academia, and service providers.

Through constructive dialogue, informative showcases, and networking opportunities, participants will explore strategies and solutions under the unifying theme of “Transforming the Nation through Mineral Extraction.”

Join us as we embark on this exciting journey to unlock the full potential of Malawi’s mining sector and contribute to the nation and the continent’s sustainable development and economic growth.
