DEPARTMENT OF MINES

Department of Mines was established in 1983 to spearhead mining and petroleum development as a way of diversifying the economic base of the country. 

The Office of Commissioner for Mines and Minerals strategic objectives are to:
  1. Provide technical advice and guidance in the administration of the Mines and Minerals Act, 2019; Petroleum (Exploration and Production) Act, 1983; and Explosives Act, 1968.
  2. Coordinating implementation of the Mines and Minerals Policies and strategies;
  3. Periodical review of: solid mineral and upstream petroleum legal and regulatory frameworks; Mines and Minerals Policy; and strategies to ensure consistency with the overall national development policy and other sectoral policies;
  4. Issuance of non-exclusive prospecting licences, small-scale mining licences, mineral export permits and reserved minerals licences;
  5. Issuance of upstream petroleum exploration and production licences;
  6. Inquiring and deciding on all disputes between parties involved in solid mineral and upstream petroleum activities; and
  7. Maintenance of a register of mineral rights holders and concession areas to ensure orderly exploration and mining operations in the country.
